牛小波出生在一个棺材世家，小时候一场荒诞的事故，他永远失去“笑容”，幸好一直生活在农村，简单的环境没让他觉得不会“笑”是一件多么严重的事情。长大后努力走出大山，离开养大他的棺材铺，到外面的世界去闯荡，却还是不得不进了殡仪馆工作。在殡仪馆中小波见证了人生百态，从一个殡仪馆杂工的视角出发，对亲情、友情、爱情重新理解，在“人生最后一站”的平台上，让小波慢慢成长。最终牛小波学会了“笑”，但是在最后一位亲人舅舅李青松离开他的那一天。。A tenuously linked group of nobodies trudge through their woeful existence in dreary Winnipeg.
