金门商人洪耀金因生意常往来于大陆、台湾之间，并因此结识了福建姑娘林岳敏，两人日渐生情，共同成就了一桩“跨越海峡”的婚姻…… 当林岳敏踏进金门洪家的时候，她发现丈夫与前妻所生的女儿洪雨薇生性执拗偏激、性格反叛的洪语薇以对待“闯入者”的态度对待自己。一次次的捉弄和挑衅似乎在考验林岳敏的秉性和忍耐力。好在林岳敏的善良和亲切让从小缺失母爱的儿子洪乔恩感受到了温暖，乔恩格外喜欢这个年轻的后妈。 随着时光的流逝，岳敏逐渐适应了金门的生活，洪雨薇也渐渐地从内心接纳了年轻、善良、聪慧的岳敏，一家人逐渐地变得融洽、和谐。 时间就这样缓缓流淌。已经习惯金门生活的岳敏怀孕了；洪耀金在大陆的生意日渐红火；雨薇性格也变得开朗阳光，学习成绩也有了显著进步并最终考上了清华大学……。In the suburbs of Rome two very different souls intersect. This semi-documentary slice of life is based on the diaries of Elmore Randall Stewart about her days on the Wyoming frontier in the early 20th century. It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut. Winner of the 1980 Berlin Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival。
