随着中国解放，江南某城喜红楼的一群烟花女子被送去劳教营。秋仪和小萼是一对好姐妹，中途秋仪逃跑，小萼则留在劳动营里。无处可去的秋仪来到旧相好老浦家。浦少爷不务正业，整天与秋仪混在一起，遭到浦老太太的不满，秋仪无奈离去。几经周折，秋仪万念俱灰到尼姑庵出了家。土地改革后，老浦也结束了少爷生活，到工厂当了会计。小萼从劳教营出来，替代了秋仪和老浦相好，两人结为夫妻。 秋仪发现自己怀了老蒲的孩子，只好又还了俗，在老蒲和小萼的婚礼上送给他们一把伞。婚后，恶习不改的小萼好吃懒做、挥霍无度，只凭工资吃饭的老蒲养不起她，便去贪污分款，事情暴露老浦因犯贪污罪被枪决。秋仪来到老浦家，两个女人言归于好，小萼痛哭说是自己害了他。秋仪生下老蒲的孩子，但是没有活成，从此也不能生养了，她想领养老蒲和小萼的儿子，但小萼舍不得。守了一年寡，小萼再也熬不下去了，她把孩子托给秋仪，跟一个北方人走了，从此没有了音讯。秋仪则心满意足地当起了孩子的母亲。。A film version of a play Fassbinder directed in Hamburg, Clare Booth Luce's "The Women".
