抗战爆发后，心明投身抗战，至今杳无音讯。他在上海的朋友高志坚（舒适 饰）十分挂念。他经常通过住处中隐藏着的广播电台收听抗战的消息。他偶尔会去看望心明的妻子——告别歌坛的李湘梅（周璇 饰）。适逢湘梅生日，志坚便买了留声机赠予她作为礼物，不想竟然“撞衫”。他陪湘梅回家看望了心明的母亲，老人家双目失明，一心挂念着在战场上的儿子。志坚和湘梅为了宽慰老人，分别编造了心明回信的谎言，以让老人宽心。志坚见到心明家里经济拮据，虽然自己手头并不宽裕却也慷慨解囊，令湘梅十分感动。为了给老人补身体，湘梅来药店购买鱼肝油，因价格昂贵正在犹豫之间，而恰好碰见之前的女友。后者不但帮她埋单，而且还约她来家中小座。见湘梅经济困难，女友鼓励她复出歌唱，别埋没了金嗓子。湘梅觉得心明在前线生死未卜，如此登台并不妥当。然而，架不住老友怂恿，终于低调复出，不想正被志坚撞见。。Kato is an aspiring screenwriter treading water. One of the men finds out who the bikers are, arms himself and goes after them.。
